The National Gallery in Prague / Veletržní Palace

Famous anthropologist Philippe Descola comes to Prague upon an invitation from the French Institute in Prague, the National Gallery in Prague, and the Fotograf Festival in order to give a lecture focused on the political issues related with contemporary times we live in, and evoking the contribution of social sciences to the recomposition of a world which is profoundly affected by the global warming.

Philippe Descola (* 1949)  started with an interest in philosophy and later became a student of Claude Lévi-Strauss. He lived with the Achuar from 1976 to 1978. His reputation largely arises from these ethnographic studies in the Amazon region. Descola is currently chair of anthropology at the Collège de France.  Philippe Descola has become one of the most important anthropologists working today, andBeyond Nature and Culture has been a major influence in European intellectual life since its French publication in 2005. At its heart is a question central to both anthropology and philosophy: what is the relationship between nature and culture?

Event will be simultaneously translated into Czech. Free entry.
